Privacy Policy

Here are the basics:

Squarespace does keep track of IP addresses as people visit the site, but this does not include personally identifiable information. I don't collect any of your information unless you sign up to receive email newsletters, and that information I won't share with anyone.

In order to help pay for this site, I plan to allow Google and others to place ads on the page. Some of these ads will use the cookies stored on your computer to tailor ads more towards your personal preferences. Here's what Google says I should include in the Privacy Policy:

  • Third party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to your website.
  • Google's use of the DART cookie enables it and its partners to serve ads to your users based on their visit to your sites and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • Users may opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the advertising opt-out page. (Alternatively, you can direct users to opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.)

If you're really worried about the advertisers, I strongly recommend clicking that opt-out page link.

Here's something else Google tells me:

If you have not opted out of third-party ad serving, the cookies of other third-party vendors or ad networks may also be used to serve ads on your site, and should be disclosed in your privacy policy as well in the following manner.

  • Notify your site visitors of the third-party vendors and ad networks serving ads on your site.
  • Provide links to the appropriate vendor and ad network websites.
  • Inform your users that they may visit those websites to opt out of cookies (if the vendor or ad network offers this capability). Users can opt out of some, but not all, of these cookies in one location at the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out website atwww.networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp

So far, I have not intentionally signed up any third-party vendors other than Google. Over time, I plan to sign up with others (Groupon comes to mind), and when I do, I may modify this privacy policy to give you more information. If you have questions, use the contact me form to send them and I will provide you as much information as I can.

Update: Commission Junction

I am now a member of Commission Junction, so I will be using some of their ads as well. The privacy policy they use is here
